No doubt somebody will point out that there are fake monks around in Tokyo, but that doesn’t make a difference to me and it doesn’t change the impact of this shot as we know that there are real monks in Ginza, as one of the monks during a shukubo on Mt Koya confirmed.
Yes, it doesn’t matter to me whether they are fake or real. I’ve no way of knowing either. But like you say, what isn’t in dispute is that they make for great subjects.
A few weeks ago I spent about two weeks in and around Chichibu: what a revelation from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima which I also visited. I have been many times in Tokyo but hadn’t been to the other places for many years, what a difference from before: In Chichibu I found kind an friendly people, eager to chat and received none of those accusing glares.
Yes, the area/place can make a huge difference, can’t it? I often notice it when traveling outside Tokyo. Such a shame it has to be like that. Tokyo could be a far more friendly place. Hard to understand quite why it isn’t…

Great shot, great contrast.

Oh yes, that stare. A little too evil. And a little too familiar.
Lee says
Yeah, sadly not unfamiliar at all…

What a great photograph – Wako, a subway exit and a monk.

Cheers. All the sights and sounds of Ginza!
