Recently there’s been no shortage of photos on these pages documenting houses that have been demolished. There was a whole host of them in this series, and a single, very poignant loss in this post. Such scenes aren’t exaggerations either, as a lot of old Tokyo is very rapidly disappearing, but for now at least, there’s thankfully still a lot to see. Like the house below for example. The shape and corrugated exterior make it as wonderfully ordinary as so many others, and yet on this particular day, the light and the owner’s colour coordinated outfit made it that little bit more special.

It’s nice sometimes to see someone who seems to recognize the honor of having his portrait taken by you, instead of giving you the side-eye 🙂
Lee says
Yes, it makes a nice change from a dirty look, although I think it was much more surprise than honour!

I love how even his shoes are blue. So cute! 🙂
Lee says
Yeah, the blue shoes are quite something. Something of a rarity, but absolutely perfect here.

Thanks for another gem. While these old homes are disappearing, I bet that there are still large numbers of them all around Tokyo. Probably even more so in other smaller cities in Japan.
Lee says
You are welcome as always.
Yes, thankfully still lots of them left, both in Tokyo and beyond. Their lifespans are now very likely tied in with their current occupants. When one goes, the other generally follows. They look fantastic but are now well past their best, and in winter they must be terribly cold to say the least…

What area is this? I am coming to Tokyo soon and studying urban change and redevelopment. I would love to see some old tin/corrugated iron row houses and dwellings like this!
