When taking pictures on Tokyo’s streets, my main aim is to do so discreetly, with the hope of capturing a true moment, and not one interrupted by a camera-wielding intruder. An ideal that’s sadly not always doable, resulting in what could sometimes be deemed the odd dirty look.
And yet now and again, actually getting caught can produce a scene that’s a little bit special, and something that simply wouldn’t have occurred otherwise. Although to be fair, the lady’s contentment is somewhat countered by her dog’s apparent discontent.

Caught out or not, lovely expression on her face. I think those dogs always look like that though 😉
Love your work!
Lee says
Thanks Andrew! Very kind of you to say so.
Yes, it was a lovely moment. If more people smiled as readily and radiantly as that, Tokyo would be a far more relaxed, and much friendlier, place.

Aw I love shi tsus ^_^;; This one looks like a toy!!
And I do love the expression on the lady’s face too 🙂

Yes, as soon as I lifted the camera up she gave me that big, genuine smile. It made my day that’s for sure.

They do love their dogs in Japan! That is a wonderful photo. Nice light and great subject!
Lee says
Cheers Julie! And yes, they do indeed.
As the walkway moved along she was in and out of the light, but luckily I just managed to catch her at the right moment.

Hey Lee, I’m always enjoying your pictures.
However, how do you manage taking such a shot? Before snapping, do you smile to the lady ? Do you make a sign, requesting approval or something ? I’m curious. I love taking pictures of people but it’s really hard :p
Lee says
Cheers TigrouMeow. As I mentioned, I prefer to try and take photos without the subject being aware of me, but in this situation it was hard not to be noticed, and I was smiling as I took the shot as the two of them looked so happy together. But whether she reacted to that, or just the fact that I was taking a photograph, I don’t know.
TigrouMeow says
I see 🙂 Which lenses are you usually using by the way ?
Lee says
For street photography, primarily the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4. It’s a lovely lens, plus it allows a little distance between me and the subject. I’m not comfortable getting really up close and personal.
Lizzy says
Her sincere smile really lights up the whole picture. Fantastic.
Lee says
Yes, a smile to brighten even the darkest of days.
