Tokyo, of course, has no shortage of modern, fancy shops and supermarkets. Plus these days there are convenience stores on what seems like every other corner. But in older parts of the city, traditional little shopping streets still manage to survive. Places run by locals, for locals and largely catering for their simple daily needs.

I’ve visited so many of these, it’s such a familiar sight – except for some reason the ones I’ve been to never include a guy giving me that special Tokyo Times look…

Haha. My winning smile clearly isn’t anywhere near as winning as I’d like to think it is!

Very cool. I’m a big fan of the view down the street. Framed so good as usual! 🙂
Lee says
Thank you! This one came out way better than I expected when I pressed the shutter. Always a treat when that happens.

It’s always nice to see that the new doesn’t completely wipe out the old. And I particularly like that, as you say, these traditional streets actually exist for the locals (rather than just for heritage tourists, in which case the distinct sense will be that they’re really just there for show).
Lee says
It is, and fortunately there are plenty of such streets still going. They are changing though, with closed down shops often being replaced by new homes. But yeah, if they ever become part of some kind of heritage project, it’s likely all their character will be lost.

This sort of scene is a favourite of mine, there is so much to look at and discover later when you look at the photos you took. Mine though – aside from being randomly framed, generally have the person closest with their back to me – precisely to avoid those looks 🙂
Whilst a shot down Ginza or Oxford Street has its place, I’d take a scene like this one any day.
I like the run of purple from the bell through the brolly to the skirt.
Lee says
Glad you get so much out of them. I certainly do, so always good to hear someone else enjoys them.
To be honest, I used to try and avoid such looks. Well, pretty much looks of any kind. Took me a while to get comfortable with them too, but the results always spurred me on.
Good call. I hadn’t noticed the purple. Would like to say I planned that, but it was anything but the case!

Nice photo!
In what area of Tokyo was this taken?
Lee says
Cheers!
It’s not far from Komagome station on the Yamanote line.
