The lights and iconic signboards of Osaka’s Dotonbori district are well documented, but personally, it’s the rather less well known after dark sides of the city that appeal. Quiet corners and little bars that arguably speak more about the lives and times of those who live there.
So here then is a set of scenes from some nocturnal wanders and drinks a couple of weeks ago. Photos that go nicely with my recently posted daytime series of people and similarly local places.

These are all interesting counter views to the usual neon and crowds. I’m also very drawn to the intimacy of the bar shots. Real city life.

Thanks a lot. Definitely a very different side to the city that’s for sure. And those little standing bars are truly wonderful. Like you said, a taste of real life.

Such character and colour. I am in awe of your ability to get such fantastic night time photographs.
That last one is so colourful it could be a christmas card 🙂
The owner looks like they have just cast a spell at a customer who had tried to run off without paying, and all that was left was their umbrella.

Thanks a lot. Still feel I’m finding my way with night photography, but very much enjoying the journey.
That last one was something special. First time I’d seen it open and it didn’t disappoint. Plus it’s now even more special imagining the disappeared customer!

Wonderful photos of Osaka. The last place used to host an event called “Coltrane Night” in which top jazz musicians play for tips because they liked the atmosphere so much.
