Valentine visits

Seeing as it’s Valentine’s Day, the nation’s love hotels will probably have a busier than usual Monday. So in honour of the occasion, here are a few statistics I came across recently.

There are 37,000 such hotels in Japan, and nearly 500 million couples visit them each year. Which apparently works out at 1,370,000 couples using a love hotel everyday. A figure that is more than double the number of people who visit the disturbingly popular Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea combined.

And as far as expenditure goes, the average couple is said to spend about 8,000 yen (40 pound) a visit. Adding up to a phenomenal 4 trillion yen in yearly sales. Which works out at about 1 trillion yen more than the annual takings of the Japan Racing Association.

Make of those figures what you will.

The key to success

Chocolate is the Valentine’s Day present of choice in Japan, but for the slightly more imaginative, Triumph International has come up with this racy little number.

The Little Evil Angel’s Bra as it’s called was a big seller last winter, and the bra sported the words, “You are the only one who’s got a key to open my heart.” But as you can see from the picture, this year’s design has gone one step further and actually included a real lock to open.

Meaning the person lucky enough to be given a key should be able to get those undergarments off quicker than you can say “modern-day chastity belt.”

Fondling farmer

Perhaps spending too much time alone in the rice fields has affected 37-year-old farmer Hiroyuki Matsuoka’s sense of what’s right and wrong. As in the early hours of Tuesday morning he approached a woman from behind and hugged her. But this was no innocent cuddle, as the frustrated farmer used the moment to cop a feel of the lady’s breasts.

The word cop however is especially significant. For starters the incident took place behind a police box of all places. And to make matters even worse, the woman involved was actually a cop, but having just popped out for a drink she’d put a jacket on over her uniform.

Oh dear.

Furtive fire fighter

As upskirt photography appears to be relatively common in Japan, a report of every incident or arrest would probably require a site dedicated solely to such material. Although in all honesty it has to be said that Tokyo Times hasn’t exactly shied away from mentioning such shady shenanigans. But last week a senior fire fighter was caught in the act, and his inventive approach makes his case stand out from the rest somewhat.

Rather than hanging around escalators, or taking clandestine pictures on the train, 31-year-old Michinori Okabe took a patient to the hospital along with a camera equipped mobile phone hidden in his shoe.

With incredible dedication to his own unique brand of photography, Okabe made a 5 mm hole in the instep of one of his shoes in order to line-up the camera on his phone. And using the mobile’s movie mode he attempted to film up the skirt of two women.

Despite the ingenious nature of his camera-equipped shoe, Okabe’s technique appears to have let him down, as a patient saw him engaged in a spot of foot filming. Resulting in the fire fighter’s ignominious arrest.

During questioning Okabe admitted to the charges, saying, “I wanted to film women’s underwear. I did the same thing at the hospital on January 4th.” And presumably with the body part pun very much unintended, he added, “I was trying to take secret footage.”

Perverted panty procurer

Whilst the ban on used underwear selling is probably to be commended, it could be argued that the clampdown has pushed the nation’s panty perverts into ever more desperate and debauched behaviour.

As in the early hours of Saturday morning, a man armed with a paper cutter attempted to get a 25-year-old woman to part with her panties in the middle of a Sapporo street. Thankfully the woman didn’t succumb to part-time worker Mitsuaki Fujieda’s deviant demand, and after letting out a scream, the would-be panty pilferer ran away.

Yet perhaps emboldened by her attackers reaction, the woman and her friend gave chase and managed to catch the fleeing Fujieda-san. After eventually being handed over to the police, the man was charged with attempted robbery.

Big breast betrayal

Health product company owner, Akihito Ishii, was arrested yesterday for selling a breast enlargement medicine that had no effect whatsoever. A violation of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law.

Ishii-san promoted the product by saying, “No matter what bust size you have, you’ll be two sizes bigger by the following month. You’ll easily make that D-cup bust you’ve always wanted.” A bold claim indeed.

Unfortunately a large number of women fell for this outlandish sales pitch, and it is estimated that 36,000 boxes of the breast enlarging tablets were sold. Netting Ishii a cool 200 million yen (1 million pound) profit.

Those who took the pills said they had no side effects, but at the same time no effect in the breast department either. Which in some cases is perhaps just as well, as investigators are directly accusing Mr. Ishii of selling 48 boxes of tablets to a 27-year-old woman and eleven others. That’s a lot of tablets. Just imagine what the young ladies would have looked like if the medicine had worked.
