Cherry blossom season is understandably a big deal in Japan. The weather is warmer. The flowers are beautiful. And the booze flows like there’s no tomorrow. Or at the very least a tomorrow that doesn’t involve getting up early or doing anything particularly taxing.
But at the same time, it’s such a big deal that one must go out and celebrate it. And one must have a good time. No matter how difficult, or how bad an idea, that may be.

The old couple looked bored especially the lady is sulking. Maybe she did not manage to get a nice picture of Cherry Blossom?
But the younger lady on other side of table looked so happy with family. 🙂

Looks as if they are all in some crap, seasonal beer garden. This would be enough to put me in a foul mood as well.

It was actually in Yasukuni. A very popular hanami location. Quite beautiful too. But on an overcast day. Without the blossoms in sight. It certainly doesn’t look the jolliest of spots…

I’ve been to Yasukuni and toured the “museum,” never during hanami. A truly odd place.
Lee says
Yes. Especially the museum.
The atmosphere at Yasukuni can be incredibly different depending on when you go. I’ve visited on days when the nationalists have been there in huge numbers, and it’s intimidating to say the least. Not to mention incredibly unwelcoming. And yet during events like hanami it’s a wonderfully friendly. Just a fun place to be.
Can’t think of anywhere else quite like it.

They might have the time of their lives, but I find the people of that age rarely show any happiness, surprise or any emotion. Just not done!
Lee says
That’s very true, and could well have been the case with these two. But, if I had to bet on it, I’d stick with them being miserable!

Ueno park is always miserable it seems during cherry blossom season. Crowded and bugs everywhere. I went to shinjuku gyoen the following day and it’s much more pleasant. Definetly worth the 200 yen. And there are always ways to sneak in beer 🙂
Lee says
Yeah, Shinjuku Gyoen is beautiful. A very different vibe than many of the other places too.
