I couldn’t figure out why I saw so many young women in kimonos and young men in suits in Atsugi City yesterday until I saw an SUV tearing down the road with seemingly all occupants sitting on the edges of the windows and howling like dogs; then I put it together.
The Wikipedia article that you link to is amusing to me: “(…) and to help them realize that they have become adults.” Fun time is over; conform, the nail that sticks out will be hammered down”
My Japanese teacher when I was living in France always enjoyed sharing stories of Japanese office life and why he moved to Paris to be as eccentric as he wanted to be 🙂
It’s always shocking to see how quickly Japan’s young change once Uni is nearly done and job hunting starts. Those recruit suits are donned, and all individuality is gone — possibly forever…

Haha, sounds like they were certainly enjoying their day!
Didn’t see that many when out and about yesterday, although I wasn’t near any of the popular gathering places.
