The setting, as well as the animated faces of the older fellas were interesting, but in the end, it was the amused look of the young woman in the corner that really made the moment for me.

Hehe, she looks so quietly amused by the old guys. 🙂
Yeah, she really was. It would have been nice to see what the photo was, and what they were talking about it, but maybe the mystery of it is more interesting.
Wow! I’ve watched Midnight Diner on Netflix in the U.S. This looks similar to a typical scene. Three younger women on one side, older guys around a corner.
Midnight Diner is a brilliant show and I absolutely love it. Nothing really happens in most of the episodes, but it still makes for fantastic viewing. And yes, this scene is rather reminiscent of the show. Pity the master wasn’t in the shot!!
Yeah, there really are, aren’t there? Even more so in the older suburbs. Searching them out and then drinking in them is always a huge pleasure. Definitely one of the many positives of living in Tokyo.
This time around, I didn’t make it to Kabuto/Omoide Yokocho. But I did go to great izakaya in Yoyogi-Uehara and Kichijoji and also spent time near the tracks at Koenji. I reckon the latter would be fertile ground for your bar photography. 🙂
That sounds nice and varied. Always good to try out new places regardless of how good the known haunts are.
Cheers. I have friends in Koenji, so I’ve drank there a good few times. It’s especially interesting in summer, as some of the bars have makeshift tables outside.
What a fascinating scene. It’s just an every day bar scene, but you’ve captured a great moment.
Interesting to learn about Midnight Diner (thanks Steve, Rohan, YTSL) and will look out for it. The films I have found, but only as expensive imports. I like Friends and loved Cheers back in the day, so am keen to give this a go.
Ha! Marvelous – just remembered Netflix. Don’t use it much as most of what I search for isn’t there – but Midnight Diner is. Just watched Series 1 Episode 1. This has really made my day 🙂
I found it on there too. Had no idea it was a Netflix show. Decided to have a ‘quick look’ at the first episode late last night and then ended up watching the first 3. Very enjoyable.

I found a photo online:

Cheers, nicely spotted. Not dissimilar at all. Scenes that are also happily played out all over the country, all nights of the week.

Yes, although the people who run this place aren’t as photogenic as the master in Midnight Diner.
You know, apart from little clips, I still haven’t seen it. Something I need to correct very soon.

There are two “Midnight Diner” movies along with the TV show. Perhaps you could start with the first movie? (Both films are highly recommended!)
Lee says
Thanks, good to know where the best place to start is.

I was in Tokyo last week and there really are so many atmospheric eateries and bars about to spend time in — and be beautifully photographed by you. 🙂

And thanks, that’s very kind of you!

It looks a bit less expense for a drink than here…

…but the banter is all musical.
Lee says
Yes, prices would likely be considerably more expensive there, but that’s banter on a whole other level!
