I always found Japanese cemeteries much more tranquil than western ones, and used to like visiting them just for that sense of peacefulness – except at night, when they’re far creepier than any in the West, except for maybe New Orleans, or France’s Pere Lachaise. Old, abandoned Japanese cemeteries are also scarier looking than Western ones. Do you have any photos of haka haikyo?
Yeah, I like wandering round them. Incredibly peaceful places. Except when it’s windy, as the sotoba – I think that’s the right name for the wooden sticks places behind the graves – rattle so much it almost seems like the dead are talking.
Never visited a haikyo graveyard. Never even thought about it to be honest. Does sound fascinating though.
Yeah, no idea what the deal was. I was just passing through when I saw him, and didn’t stop to watch him. It was warm, but not that warm, so my best guess would be jogging.
Dan Ryan says
Perhaps he was running for his life.
Lee says
Maybe or possibly running for, and reflecting on it.
Martin says
His attire is casual but his expression seems to be sincere.
Lee says
It does. And whatever those thoughts were, he was certainly lost in then, as he was totally unaware of my presence.

Hans ter Horst says
That’s right, sotÅba is the correct word for them.
zoglog says
Give that man a beer!
Lee says
Yeah, the gesture would have probably been very welcome.
Hans ter Horst says
That really is a puzzler, never seen anybody dressed so casually in a graveyard before. If he were younger I would have assumed he lost a bet!
Lee says
Haha, very true.
