It’s always good to escape the concrete and crowds of the capital. Particularly so in summer when the heat is horrendous. Plus despite Tokyo’s size, you don’t have to drive for that long before it’s possible to enjoy quiet roads, the sight of tree covered mountains, and, erm, roadside whales.

Quite a find! Does it relate to anything or is it just a random whale?
Lee says
I know. Not quite what I was expecting when I drove round the corner.
No, that’s what made it even more wonderful. Just a completely random whale!

Amazing, great find! The effort somebody must have gone through to make and put it on top of that shed, just baffling. Possibly a sculpture’s work got rejected and it ended up in the garden?
Lee says
I know. A wonderful surprise.
That’s a distinct possibility. Definitely more likely than any theory I came up with.
Al says
Ha, love the complete randomness of this! 🙂
Lee says
Great, isn’t it? One of those wonderfully odd moments that Japan does so well. And fortunately, so frequently too.

Or we can just make up whatever story we want. Great find Lee.
Lee says
Cheers. Yes, definitely. Always nice when an image forces you to use your imagination.

I love how you find the unusual and the way in your photos you always seem to capture an eye looking your way, even when its a whale.
Lee says
Thanks. Glad you like that aspect. Something I almost always strive for. Unfortunately this will very likely be the only time I capture a whale looking at the camera!

Reminds me of the blue whale on old Route 66 in the US.

Interesting. Cheers for the link. Could well have been the inspiration for this one.

Was there a bowl of petunias nearby?
Lee says
I looked, but sadly not…
