Despite the clutter, congestion and camera-wielding menaces of modern Tokyo, the kimono still never fails to stand out. An outfit that’s as timeless as it is traditional, and amidst the chaos of the capital, is somehow also strangely calming.

Great composition, I know that street photography doesn’t really leave time to compose a shot, but somehow the greater names always managed to get the people to line up in a sensible way 🙂

Like you say though, there’s no way to position people, and yet the greats got/get their subjects set up so well, so often.

Looks like it could also be a way to nicely hide some warm layers underneath. Just thinking about the cold air outside in December.

Yeah, I do hope so. The fabric is presumably different for winter kimonos, plus they sometimes wear a coat of sorts, but how warm they are I really don’t know…

Nice one. Of course it’s not like it cannot happen, as we are in Japan, and they still love their traditional gown, but it is rare enough a moment to be captured. The composition with the followers on the line gives the dynamic, especially with that old lady right behind.

Yeah, they aren’t so uncommon to be a rarity, but definitely very noticeable.
Everyone lining up was wonderful. Rare for things to work out quite as well as that.
