With the Tokyo Olympics now only two years away, the city is changing at an even greater pace than usual, meaning the future is increasingly bright, reflective and generally rather bland. But for now at least there are still older structures to be found, and this one in particular is in such a bad way it’s arguably more post-apocalyptic than merely crumbling.

What’s with the car it looks almost new?
Lee says
No idea to be honest. Don’t know old it is, but it looks in good condition. Way to good to be left there…

Ahh these are the structures I often see in my part of Kansai:) and it’s strange because more often than not there is usually a nicer car parked out like that. I’m assuming that the owners can’t afford to pay for the pricey shaken on the cars for whatever reason, so they just leave them there. Enjoy the three day weekend in your neck of woods!:)
Lee says
Interesting that there are similar sights in Kansai. Even more interesting that abandoned nice cars are also a theme. But yeah, that makes sense about the cost of keeping them.
Thanks. You too. Hope the heat is somewhat bearable!

Have you seen Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Shoplifters”? I can imagine some of the film’s (underclass) protagonists frequenting locations like these…
Lee says
I haven’t, no. But on my list of films to see. And coincidentally, the film (and its director) were a topic of conversation when I was out last night.
YTSL says
I’m a big fan of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films. The much brighter “Our Little Sister” is my favorite but every film I’ve seen by him has had quite the emotional impact.
Lee says
Cheers. That’s good to know. I shall seek that one out.

How quickly and completely nature takes over. That is a fantastic photograph with the verdant greenary and rust eaten building at their most contrasting.
YTSL: thanks for the film reference. I couldn’t find Shoplifters anywhere, though the IMBD trailer makes me look forward to its dvd release. However I did order a couple of Kore-eda’s films to watch, “I Wish” and “Our Little Sister”.
Lee says
Thanks. Yeah, it really does, doesn’t it? Especially interesting to see in the middle of the city as well. Hard to see the building surviving for too much longer, although it has clearly been in a state of disrepair for quite some time.

Shoplifters is currently being showed at the theaters in Japan and it is doing well at box office.
That car is a nice bump to the nature that is owning the place slowly. Good photo.
For the car, I like and play racing video games, but owning a car? Not likely, it goes straight to extortion racket excuse for the government in my country.
Lee says
Yes, very happy to see it’s doing well. Encouraging that people are willing to go and see a side of Japan they are rarely confronted with. Or a least a side of the country that doesn’t get the exposure it really should.
Thanks. Yes, the car is a big part of the photo. Even more so with the vines now starting to grow over it as well.
