Back in September 2016, I took this photo, in a certain way, and at a certain time of the day.
Then last week I took another photo in more or less the same spot, but this time in a different way, at a different time of the year, and under considerably different lighting conditions. An exercise that seemed entirely fitting, as the wonderfully arranged streets are themselves now slightly different.

The shop is gone. What is it now?
Lee says
Good question. I have no idea to be honest. Still in the process of opening I think, although it seems to have been in that process for a long time…

I imagine a lot of potentially new shops have never opened because of the pandemic. Some neighborhoods where I live in Calif are like a ghost town. Store and store have closed down!

Instead of getting mad at the people living in that building now for not having plants in front, I’m just going to keep believing that if there’s a heaven, it looks like the first photo.

It really was lovely that day. Been past numerous times since, but never with the light quite like that. A special moment I’m very happy to have captured, and had the chance to share.

The old guy in the 2nd picture looks unhappy. Maybe heβs mourning the changes. It sure isnβt as pretty now. π
Lee says
No, it really isn’t. I know I was sad when the shop went, so he could have been.

I used to love those “spot the difference ” puzzles as a child. I still do apparently π
I’m not sure the old owners have gone, as the interesting blue metal wheeled plant cart is still there, just around the corner. Perhaps the authorities just got a bit enthusiastic about the clutter out front. On the other side the new air vent connects exactly where the two previous bits were.
I had a look back at the original post and rediscovered your CNN video. Very nostalgic to see the video again, now overlaid with memories of walking the same streets with you on a photo walk tour π
Not sure if this format of link will work – please tidy it up if it doesn’t.

I found myself doing exactly the same. Compared to many streets, the changes are really quite minimal. Aside from the shop sign and plants of course.
Certainly a mystery. It was boarded up for a while and looked a right mess. Then it changed to the current look, but then halted before it seemed quite ready. So we will just have to wait and see. That said, Mirmire II is looking doubtful..
Ah, thanks. That’s a nice reminder. Both of the video and our walk. Like so many things these days, it almost seems like another life, but a life that will hopefully return soon.
