Much is made of modern, high-tech Tokyo, but at heart it’s a traditional, often old-fashioned city. And so when seen in a certain light, it can be difficult to know what decade, or sometimes even era, one is in.

Wow, timeless for sure. Love her expression. That hair too. Again, wow!
Wow, yes! This is awesome; you nailed this. The subject of course, but also the graininess (due to noise and high ISO settings or something like that) and contrast really gives it that timeless feeling that TRI-X at ISO 800 or 1600 adds to a photo.
Really pleased with how it came out for exactly the reasons you mention. Even more so as I spotted her late and had to shoot from the hip. Didn’t have time to do otherwise. But in many ways that’s what made it. If only things worked out that way more often!
And how many shots have you shared with us that turned out this way as opposed to those labo(u)red over that turned out disappointing? The “grab shot” is often the best.
Yes, can’t argue with that. The vast majority of my shots are taken quickly, with the composition being instinctive rather than anything planned/thought out. And yeah, they are often better than the overly scrutinised efforts when a I do have the chance to think — or should that be over think? — a bit.

Quite a look, isn’t it? In more ways than one too.

Nice shot. Something of the Queen Victoria’s about her. Not sure she’d make my next party invite list.
Lee says
Cheers. That’s a very good description. Sums it up perfectly.

The black and white make this shot look like it was taken in about 1930.
Lee says
Does have that feel, doesn’t it? I had hopes, but it came out way better than I expected.
