The other week I posted some old and newer graffiti photos on my Instagram account. A mix of people and places from over the years that I re-edited and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting.
Some of them have appeared on Tokyo Times before, but several haven’t, and only a couple in this newly edited form. So with that in mind, it seemed like a good idea to post them. It’s also nice to be able to show the whole set, and at a fairy decent size and resolution. Plus as a decidedly dubious bonus of sorts, I’ve also added a very rare one of me in a favourite little spot of mine. The shot taken by my mate and co-author of the Tokyo Conversations photobook, Giovanni. A nicely meta photo of a photobooth, featuring a photographer, taken by his photographer friend.

These are awesome. I love em all but the orange cab. Wow!
Lee says
Thanks a lot. Had to wait a long time, on numerous occasions, to get that one.

Yes, the stripes alone would have been nice. The additional cab makes this a really great picture. Love it!
Lee says
Thanks a lot. Definitely happy with the result. Also, those stripes are now gone, and the orange cabs are few and far between. So very glad I got it when I did.

Lee, at the sound of being repetitive, nothing amazes me more than graffiti in Nippon. I only spent about 1 week there in 2012, but I was constantly impressed by such a clean, organic, well run modern country. So seeing this painted on vandalism just seems to run contrary to everything this country represents.

To be fair there isn’t a huge amount of it, but at the same there’s still a fair bit. Tends to be more in certain areas too. Buy yeah, definitely not a rarity.

This is not what I expected in Tokyo but I like the face and police officers.
Lee says
Cheers. I’m a big fan of that piece of artwork. Amazingly it has survived too.

The face by the police officers is quite good….actually what I would consider art. Most of the rest is just scribble scrabble…urban blight which makes things ugly in my opinion. It always saddens me when I see graffiti like that either here in the USA, in Tokyo, or anywhere else.

Another fine themed collection. I enjoy finding the oddly preserved sticker reservations dotted around Tokyo and compare them between visits to see the new additions.
That photobooth photograph is a nice bonus for us 🙂 Reminds me of the film Amelie.
You could “reply to” Giovanni’s photograph with one you taken of him studying the strip of boothphotos you took, and have the booth in the background.
Lee says
Thanks a lot. Yes, always interesting to see the changing stickers. Some are incredibly long lived too.
Haha, I think that would very quickly get out of hand. As much as I like that little spot, I think that’s enough!

LOl, I guess it would. There probably wouldn’t be so much of a market for Tokyo Conversations: Volume 17 – The Photobooth
Lee says
No, that’d be niche to say the least!
