Despite its sometimes maddening quest for modernity, Tokyo does still retain a decent amount of old, fairly untouched places. Even then, however, there are usually plenty of giveaway signs that it’s most definitely the present, and not some undetermined time in the past. But now and again a scene does appear that arguably wouldn’t have looked any different decades ago.

That guy got me thinking of Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso! :O
Lee says
Haha, I can see what you mean! Must be the glasses and mustache.
Squidpuppy says
LOL Spot on! I couldn’t figure out why he looked so familiar…

Another fine photograph through the lens of your time machine 🙂
Whilst it’s the bright lights and futuristic look that draws me to some cities, it’s the ability to glimpse their past that retains my interest.
Lee says
Thank you!
Likewise. Most of the city’s urban scenes fascinate me, but especially those that maintain a connection to the past. They give me at least some idea of what the Tokyo I’ll never know looked and felt like. I’ve seen plenty of photos of course, but seeing glimpses for real is so much better.

Cool. Gotta love those sunglasses! 🙂

I know eh? A style he’s quite possibly been sporting for a long, long time.

Great find, and perfectly populated. Can almost hear him saying: “Whatcha lookin’ at, kid? Ain’t ya got nuthin’ better t’do?”
I get the feeling of a canteen for industrial or railroad workers, or maybe a Shokudo at a slightly seedy amusement park. The kerosene stove and chimney – just classic. Hm. Now I want some cheap oden…
Lee says
Cheers. Yes, very happy to see him there. And I dare say his thoughts were exactly that!
It does have that vibe, doesn’t it? You’ll perhaps be surprised to hear it’s in Yasukuni. The little restaurant/shop area in the shrine grounds. Always an interesting little extra when passing through.
Squidpuppy says
Wow. Yasukuni. That is a surprise. I just missed going there this last time. Too much to see and do, too little time. Next visit I’ll definitely check it out.
Lee says
Thought you might not expect it to be Yasukuni.
I can totally imagine. But it’s definitely worth stopping by next time. Equally interesting when it’s quiet, or busy like it usually is at the weekend.
