Happily it was neither. Rather he was in the middle of a really quite elaborate exercise routine. An oddly public spot for such a thing, but clearly he didn’t care in the slightest!
I love that alcove and the random life-slices you photograph within it. The multi-hued glazed/varnished bricks, the pink granite table, the lime green phones, the inset, bright lighting, all make for a great stage to frame for us.
I think the guy is relieving a cramp, but his eyes have caught the red trim on the trainers and the line between the two perfectly balances the scene for me.
It’s odd to see pay phones in a country as wirelessly connected as Japan (better than the U.S.). I think he’s just stretching or exercising. My sense is people in Japan are more apt to do exercise spontaneously in public than people in the U.S.
That’s very true. Still surprised at the amount of stretching that goes on in public here. This fella has gone way beyond that though, as this was the end of what seemed like a pretty full on workout.

Did he step on something or was he trying to tell you to not take his picture by kicking at you?:)

Funny! 🙂 Cool to see different kinds of folk shot in the same location. You go there a lot huh? Is it near your house?

It’s definitely a good spot. But nah, not hear home as such, but it is where I often get the train either to, or from home.

Likewise. A genuinely interesting little spot, and one that has been kind to me over the years. I really hope those phones stay there…
As I mentioned above, he was exercising, but the effort he was putting in may well have resulted in cramp!

He’s doing the Hokey Pocky!
