Is that an air gap between the lower and upper levels of the house. I’ve never seen that kind of architecture before.

It was. A genuinely lovely day. Nice, warm and lovely light.
Nah, it’s just the balcony on the second floor. A set up like that is fairly common on older houses. And on older houses still, the balcony is completely wooden.
