There’s a real grittiness to many parts of east Tokyo; areas that often feel a world away from the capital’s more glitzy districts. And Ueno, with its old shopping streets and very visible homeless population, in many ways epitomises this more unforgiving side of the city.
But while some people understandably look down or round about them, others appear to be much more interested in what may be beyond.

Ueno. One of my top suburbs in Tokyo. Very gritty and underworld-y but so much to discover.

Yeah, it has always been a favourite place of mine. Fascinating area to spend a few hours in.

ELVIS LIVES… in Ueno?

Uh huh.

What a fabulous photo! His cheekbones alone make him a stunning subject…he looks like he is having a seriously profound insight into something… I really really hope he is not deciding whether or not to have foam on his latte…
TBH, I’d prefer a beer and a chat with the old bloke in front, I think. He looks like he’d have some stories to share. And the beanie alone makes him worth acknowledging.
Well done, Lee. All your photos are interesting and insightful, but this one really has the wow factor.

Thanks a lot!
It’s funny, I saw the old bloke first. Like you say, he looks like he has a few stories to tell. But then I spotted the fella behind him, with his quite distinctive looks. The pose was very much an added bonus.
Happy to hear you like it so much. I was pleased the way it came out.
